Biography —
Shellsea Martin is an Academic Advisor in the Biology Department at the University of Kansas. In this role, she assists undergraduate biology majors in navigating degree requirements, academic planning, and decision-making related to coursework and progression within the biology major. She works collaboratively with students to clarify expectations, explore academic options, and develop plans that align with their goals, while encouraging students to take ownership of their educational experience.
Prior to her work in academic advising, Shellsea followed professional paths in secondary education. She previously served as a high school biology and English language arts teacher, experiences that continue to shape her advising approach. Her background in teaching supports her ability to facilitate understanding of complex curricular structures, guide students through academic decision-making, and promote effective self-advocacy skills.
Outside of KU, Shellsea lives on a small rural farm with her husband and three daughters. She operates an educational apiary through Martin’s Hive & Harvest, where she focuses on honey bee biology, pollination, and experiential, hands-on learning. This work complements her passion for biology, applied learning, and community-based education. She is currently pursing her Master Beekeeping Certification through University of Nebraska.
