Employers and graduate schools usually ask for 3 references—and grad schools want at least one to be a professor. How can you get to know your professor and build a genuine, positive relationship?
1. Make conversation before or after class
Instead of checking your phone, chat with your professor. Ask them how they got started in their field. KU professors are full of fascinating stories!
2. Visit office hours
Stop by and say hi. Let them know something you enjoy about their class, go over an outline for an upcoming report, share some challenges or talk about your future career goals.
3. Participate in class
The squeaky wheel gets the grease. When the professor asks a question, raise your hand and offer something to the conversation.
Building a positive relationship with a professor not only enriches your learning, but it also could result in a stellar reference for grad school or jobs.
