APPLICATION FORM FOR BIOLOGY AWARDS & SCHOLARSHIPS

The Lance S. Foster Outstanding Junior in Biology Award

Through the generosity of the Foster family, the KU Undergraduate Biology Program will present an award to an outstanding KU junior majoring in biology and planning on further study or work in any area of biology. Past awards have ranged from $750 to $1,000.

To apply, please submit the following (in addition to the required information in the above application form):  
- Letter written by the applicant describing past accomplishments, career goals, and the effect of receiving this award on achieving those goals
- Statement of intent to enroll at KU for the next fall semester and a tentative list of fall courses in which to enroll (if not on the Advising Report)

Robert Tweed Hersh Memorial Award in Human Biology

Through the generosity of the Hersh family, the KU Undergraduate Biology Program will present an award to an outstanding graduating senior in the Human Biology Program whose course of study best exemplifies the interdisciplinary nature of the scientific study of humans, their origins, development, biology, and behavior. Past awards have ranged from $750 to $1000.​
Eligibility: The student’s program of study must demonstrate clearly the interdisciplinary intent of the Human Biology Program, with significant study in relevant areas of anthropology, biology, human development, psychology, and other human-oriented sciences. The student must have a GPA of 3.5 in the major and 3.25 overall (i.e., be eligible to pursue graduation with honors) and must be seeking post-graduate education in his/her chosen field of interest.

- Two-page personal statement written by the applicant that includes past accomplishments and that documents a formal or an informal interest in the fine arts (theater, dance, graphic arts, music, etc.), noting the kind and extent of participation, active support, and/or active interest in one or more of these other creative human endeavors

Ida H. Hyde Scholarship for Women in Science to Study at a Non-KU Research Laboratory

The Ida H. Hyde Research Scholarship fund provides an annual award (past awards have ranged from $500 to $3,000) to an advanced (upper-class or graduate) woman student in biology to provide an opportunity “…to study in the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, or any other marine laboratory, or any biological, chemical or physical research laboratory, offering environment and advantages different from those found in the University of Kansas….”

- Personal statement outlining past accomplishments, a brief description of the research objectives, the study location, and a description of the benefits to be derived from the opportunity to study elsewhere
- Estimated budget, including potential sources of other funding

The E. L. and Mildred Pursell Wolf Scholarship (only for graduate students; for summer)

The KU Undergraduate Biology Program will present this award to a graduate student who has demonstrated excellence in his/her field. This scholarship was given by John Wolf in honor of his parents, E. L. and Mildred Pursell Wolf. The award amount is intended to assist with tuition for the summer academic term.
Eligibility: Any KU graduate student in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology or Molecular Biosciences who is a Kansas high school graduate is eligible to apply (confirmation may be required).

- One-page research description
- Letter of recommendation must be from your graduate faculty advisor
